Chewing gum and toddlers?
Okay, maybe I’m nuts, but does it seem odd to put gum in a goodie bag for a toddler? My son’s preschool (ages 2-4) has monthly birthday parties and the birthday children’s parents bring cake, pizza and little goodie bags.
This is the third time my son has been given a goodie bag with a pack of gum in it! I appreciate that parents try to keep the candy content low (it’s usually a couple stickers and just a sucker or something) by including “sugar-free” gum.
Yes, I’m going to mention it to his daycare, my question is this: do people really give gum to two year olds???
ps: my son is almost 3 and I don’t plan on giving him gum, I just want opinions.
Children under the age of three tend to not have the coordination to protect their airway while laughing or horsing around when food in their mouths.
Some toddlers enjoy the texture and taste gum can provide, but I would have to strongly advise against them chewing it. Most gum is not of the size that it could completely occlude the airway of child; however, if it is inhaled, it could still cause significant respiratory difficulty and would need to be retrieved by a procedure requiring general anesthesia. Gum chewing is probably best postponed until at least after age four.
