Happy 25th Birthday SpongeBob Squarepants!

On July 14th it’ll be popular animated sea sponge SpongeBob Squarepants’s 25th birthday. Now, if that seems a lot, it’s true that the series has only been on air since 1999. So why is it SpongeBob’s 25th birthday then, if his Nickelodeon cartoon series has only been around for just over a decade?

Well, in any episode where SpongeBob needs to show someone an ID card, you’ll see his date of birth reads 1986. And actually, even though his series is only about half that age, SpongeBob the character has been around for longer than that. Believe it or not, the guy who created the cheerful SpongeBob and his friends (and frenemies), Stephen Hillenburg, actually started out his career as a marine biologist.

While Hillenburg was researching and teaching the the Ocean Institute in California, he drew a cartoon called The Intertidal Zone. He started this cartoon in 1984, and during its run it introduced many of the characters that would find their way into the SpongeBob Squarepants series, including a sea sponge called “Bob the Sponge”. Bob actually looked like a sea sponge though, unlike SpongeBob, who looks more like a kitchen sponge. So the character really is about 25 years old. How about that!

Hillenburg left the Ocean Institute (now called the Orange County Ocean Institute, by the way) in 1987 to become an animator. He went to art school to learn more about animation, and ended up working on the Nickelodeon cartoon series Rocco’s Modern Life. When that series ended in 1996 Hillenburg began working on the SpongeBob series.

Originally he was going to call the main character Spongeboy, but then the legal department of Nickelodeon found out that the name was already in use. There was a household product called Spongeboy. So they had to come up with something else. Hillenburg insisted that the name should start with the word “Sponge” though, because he was afraid that people might think the character was made of cheese instead!

Did you know, by the way, that Bikini Bottom is not something that Hillenburg made up out of nowhere. There is actually a real island in the Pacific Ocean called Bikini Atoll. Naturally, Hillenburg must have figured, Bikini Bottom is a very sensible name for the bottom of the sea bed under this island.
