NCAA Football – 5 Steps to Move the BCS to a Playoff

I’ll admit, I’ve been on the fence.  As a Big Ten football fan, I like the tradition of the Rose Bowl.  For all its faults, the BCS at least shined a bright light on the major college bowls, even it couldn’t always get the participants right.  Now, even a Big Ten fan has to admit that the possibility of Nebraska and Colorado battling it out as Big Ten and Pac 12 champions in the Rose Bowl is a sign that the tradition arguement is dead, if not the apocalypse .  So, lets focus on the only issue that really matters, money.

Step One – Cut the Dead Weight: With the recent addition of Western Kentucky, we stand at 120 FBS for the 2011 college football season.  That will grow by four in 2013.  No wonder no one has to play anybody.  The right number is 96 teams.  You keep the Pac 12, ACC, SEC, Big 10 as they stand.  The Big East, Notre Dame and the over achievers in the MAC and Conference USA combine to form two more conferences of 12 teams.  The Big 12 cherry pick two teams out west and the top 12 of the WAC, Mountain West and BYU combine for the final conference.  For everyone else, it is welcome to the FCS or should I say welcome back.

Step Two – Lock Out and Subsidize the FCS: So many teams in the FBS eat cupcakes in their OCC schedule, you would think Hostess sponsored it.  Why?  Everyone wants home games and the money they bring in.  Sure there is the risk you will get embarrassed by Multi-Directional U, but you mostly just write them a check to take a beating.  The only way to stop it is to forbid it.  There are enough cupcakes left in the 96 teams, you don’t need to fly in East Dakota St.  Hopefully, that will bring some consistency to everyone’s schedule.  I would even go so far as to include a preseason game and allow the redshirts to play.  Eat your cupcake, but don’t keep score. The problem is a lot of FCS teams (and the entire Sunbelt Conference) depend on this revenue.  So just cut the whole Subdivision a check and be done with it.

Step Three - Embrace Traditions During the Season:  Although the traditional conference rivalries have lost much of their steam lately, here is a chance to bring it back by having conference crossover games.   Every team plays an opposing conference one weekend for home field advantage in the first round of the playoff.  It could be traditional, like Big 10 vs Pac 12 or a round robin.

Step Four – Just Have the Damn Playoff Already: Every conference has a championship and winner goes to a 8 team playoff.  Simple, if you don’t win the championship, you don’t go.  No voters, no polls, no at-large, no tears.   With only 8 teams, it really doesn’t matter how you do it.  I prefer a traditional conference matchup in the first round to include step three, then seeding there after.

Step Five – Keep the Bowls:  The Rose, Sugar, Fiesta, and Orange are all basically consolation prizes for not making the title game now, so just leave them as is.  One of them is for the national championship, the other three are the playoff consolation prize.  Attendance would no doubt suffer, but the TV revenue who still be there and the fans would be happy.

I know I left out the exam week argument, probably understated the revenue impact of the Bowl attendance decline, and won’t be invited to a Louisiana-Monroe tailgate anytime soon, but it all seems pretty straight forward.
