You don’t want to look like you are trying too hard, you don’t want to look like it’s any other day either. How exactly do you go about finding the perfect outfit to make a splash on your birthday without doing a nose dive? Well luckily you are in the shopping capital of the United States. The good news is you can stimulate the economy without maxing out your credit card. There are a variety of department stores and boutiques to choose from when shopping in New York for the best birthday party outfit.
Lets begin at the mother ship. Bloomingdales is fantastic if you’re looking to get a taste of different designers. Their second floor offers everything from Free People to Marc by Marc Jacobs. If you have a “spare no expense for the perfect dress” mentality Bloomies may just be your best bet. Depending on the time of year you may even catch a fantastic clearance. In fact while shopping for the perfect birthday party outfit a friend of mine found truth in what she thought was an old wives tale. She bought a dress that had been marked down so many times it was on sale for five cents!! This probably wont happen on your visit but they do have excellent clearance options as seasons change.
If you couldn’t seem to find anything at Bloomingdales luckily Zara is close by. Economically the better option, Zara is perfect for essentials and will most certainly have your typical “little black dress” and those wardrobe staples you find yourself wearing forever. The inventory constantly changes so you won’t have to worry about someone else showing up in your getup.
H&M is also a great option if you are really looking to stay within a prices range. If your funds are limited I highly recommend stopping by along with Forever 21. An NYC Birthday party dress doesn’t have to be extravagant. You can pair a simple inexpensive black mini with a dressed up clutch or some fierce heels and look just as fabulous as someone shopping on 5thAve. Ok, OK, there’s a difference but We’ve all seen some pricey outfits fail. It’s all in how you carry yourself and accessorize.
Saks is another great department store if you’re looking for variety. You can also try Barneys BUT keep in mind one of the best sales in the country happens in February. The Barney’s Warehouse sale is insanity but can be well worth it. One year a Manolo pump flew passed my head so fast I was lucky to escape fully conscious. On the plus side you can leave with an $800 dress marked down to $250!
If you’re not willing to told out for a great sale and the cheaper options don’t fit your style you can always try the sometimes life saving Buffalo Exchange in the East Village. Buffalo is a consignment shop that buys and sells some incredible fashion. If you’re ok with a used dress this could be an excellent option considering the markdowns are unbelievable! Check carefully for stains etc – but most of their stuff is pretty in tact. For good Karma and a discount you can even donate or sell some of your own items.
